Adopters are Angels in Disguise
Adoption Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in adopting a senior animal. Please complete the adoption application, and a SPAAR representative will contact you if we feel your home is the right home for one of our adoptable animals. To be considered for adoption, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old for dog and bird adoptions
- Be at least 18 years old for cat and small animal adoptions
- Live near Pittsburgh, PA (within two hours driving distance or within a 130-mile radius)
- Own your home or have written landlord approval
- Agree to a home check by a recognized SPAAR representative
- Provide personal and veterinary references (Applications submitted without references will not be reviewed.)
SPAAR Adoption Process
This process applies to all adopters, including SPAAR officials, fosters, and volunteers, SPAAR supporters, foster friends and family, volunteers, and officials.
1. We encourage you to search our adoptable animals to learn more about them and see which one might be a perfect fit for your family.
2. Complete the adoption application as fully and honestly as possible. If you aren't committed to a particular animal or have more questions, we recommend that you fill out the adoption application prior to emailing SPAAR. If you would like SPAAR to recommend a pet that we feel would best suit your home, leave the animal name blank on the adoption application.
2. A SPAAR representative will review your application and contact your references.
3. If we determine you and one of our adoptable animals are a good match, we will contact you to arrange a home visit and meet the animal. To match adoptable dogs with families who currently own dogs, we will meet at a neutral area after we complete a home check. Please understand that a SPAAR representative may suggest an alternative animal for adoption than the one for which you have applied.
4. If SPAAR receives more than one application for the same animal, we will determine the best home for the animal.
5. If we feel the animal is a good fit with your family, we will then arrange a required two-week home trial period. At the end of two weeks, if both parties still feel that it is a good fit, SPAAR will schedule a meeting for you to complete a final adoption contract, where we will collect an adoption fee for your pet and take your happy tails adoption photo!
6. If you do not hear from SPAAR within 10 working days of your submission, you may assume that your application has been declined for that animal. However, do not let that discourage you for applying for a different animal in the future.
